While we may have only the sunny and wet weather in Singapore, Springtime calls for celebration as our Chinese friends usher in the year of the Monkey. And since we’re on the topic of Monkey, did you know that it is part of the 12 Chinese zodiac?
The Chinese zodiac comprise of 12 animal signs which include: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and the Pig. The zodiac is a repeating cycle of 12-years and each year is represented by an animal. This year, it is represented by the Monkey.
As early as 1700s, the 12 zodiac signs were already an important part of the Chinese culture. When an Italian Jesuit missionary went to China in 1715, Emperor Qianlong put him in charge of designing the Old Summer Palace (an imperial garden). The artist was none other than Giuseppe Castiglione, who went on to create the 12 zodiac animal sculptors that were part of a water fountain situated in the Old Summer Palace.
And there you have it, the brief history behind Giuseppe Castiglione and the 12 zodiac sculptures. One of the popular escape rooms in Singapore, our themed room Castiglione is based on the invasion of foreign troops into the Old Summer Palace during the Second Opium War in China.
